HR Services For Your Business
We work with a wide range of commercial SME’s, public sector organisations and charities supporting managers with a variety of HR needs ranging from the day to day bread and butter basics through to the implementation of significant organisational change and successfully resolving sensitive or challenging HR issues.
Is your business being held back by people problems? Perhaps you have too many or not enough or you simply need to do things differently? We can help you plan your future staffing and HR strategy requirements and prepare for the expected or indeed react and deal with the unexpected. Together we can make business change happen and do it in a way that you can afford, maintains your reputation and ensures you make the right decision for the right reason.
We are experienced in managing restructures, succession planning, creating new roles, redundancies, TUPE transfers, exit strategies and settlement agreements, project working, changing terms and conditions and introducing new ways of working.
Working relationships can be complicated but they don’t need to be. Experience over the years has taught us that many managers and business owners are excellent in their technical areas but may not have the confidence to effectively manage people. We will help you get the best from your team and develop colleagues who are motivated to do the best for your business.
We can help you find ways to reward and say thank you for a job well done, effectively manage performance, train and develop your team, provide meaningful feedback and create a working environment which is satisfying and enjoyable to be in.
HR also goes a long way beyond hiring and firing. People are central to the running of your business and every so often things may not go quite as planned. We can support you to resolve problems such as unreliable staff, sickness absence, negative attitudes, disciplinary matters, unhappy employees, poor job performance, implementing unpopular changes or improving difficult working relationships.
We have extensive experience in conducting impartial, internal workplace investigations and / or can act as the HR advisor for formal meetings, including any appeal procedure. We also support you to legally say goodbye to those who are not right for your business when needed.
For many business owners and managers your day to day focus and priority is on delivering your own products and services. You may have a list of employment related things you would ideally like to progress or implement but simply haven’t the time or resource to do so.
We can act as your project lead to review your current practices, policies or procedures, seek feedback from colleagues where relevant, recommend changes, introduce new initiatives and work with you to ensure things are successfully implemented. Previous projects have included changing appraisal practices, introducing more robust methods to manage sickness absence, improving induction procedures, creating skills matrixes or pay and grading frameworks, policy development, reviewing benefits packages or introducing affordable terms and conditions which help to attract and retain a loyal team.
Ensuring your business meets the statutory obligations as an employer is at the heart of everything we do and, whilst helping you to mitigate or manage risk, we always keep you legal. This sometimes means receiving honest advice that you may not want to hear! We will demystify employment law and relate it back to everyday, practical management action and ensure you understand what you have to do, might like to do, don’t need to do and what you absolutely must not do!
You often only require a simple answer to what can feel like a complicated question. Our goal is to keep you out of a tribunal by getting it right in the first place and avoiding employee grievances or unnecessary legal costs.
Every so often HR can become particularly complex or unusual situations arise and, should this happen, we work with employment solicitors to seek advice as necessary.
We can audit your existing employment contracts, HR policies or staff handbooks and update or provide new documentation as required.
We can provide standard or bespoke management training workshops to help build confidence and knowledge within your business and equip you and your managers with the day to day skills to effectively manage people.
Topics include:
- How to get the best from your team
- Managing Poor Performance
- Managing Sickness Absence
- Managing Misconduct and Disciplinary
- Difficult Conversations and Effective Feedback
- Getting the best from your Appraisal Process
- Conducting Workplace Investigations
How We Work with Our Clients
We specialise in providing a responsive, affordable and flexible HR service to a diverse range of Somerset businesses and organisations whose HR requirements can vary significantly at any one time. Acting as our client’s HR Manager our pragmatic approach is tailored accordingly, offering remote or on-site advice and practical assistance as needed on a flexible, pay as you go basis.
As an SME client you may not have any in-house HR resource or may have limited capacity reserved for the day to day HR basics. We work with business owners, and key members of your team, providing advice, direction and an extra pair of hands to support you with aspects of people management that may be new to you, may be more difficult, detailed or sensitive than you normally deal with or that you simply need additional resource for. For example, managing frequent or long-term sickness absence concerns, misconduct and potential disciplinary issues, resolving staff concerns, maternity or other family friendly leave, responding to flexible working requests or dealing with changes within your business including redundancies.
We can also review and/or provide you with updated or new employment contracts, core HR policies and staff handbooks.
Our HR Essentials Packages are particularly helpful for businesses becoming an employer for the first time. This can be an exciting, yet daunting, prospect and we work with new employers to provide a basic level of support to get you started on the right path to becoming a great employer.
Our larger clients often have an in-house team member responsible for HR, or indeed a dedicated HR team. We recognise that your needs are likely to be very specific and we are very happy to work alongside your own HR colleagues to provide additional resource to assist with whatever your requirements are at that time. Working within your own policies, procedures or systems, including consultation with Senior Managers, Directors or Trade Union colleagues where relevant, we can provide short term cover, assist you to progress and implement projects or organisational changes, conduct reactive or proactive stress risk assessments or for those occasions when you need an impartial and external viewpoint, carry out workplace investigations or provide advice to formal hearings including appeal panels.
We provide advice and solutions designed to make HR easy for you to put into practice and which keeps you legal. We recognise the financial challenges you may be facing, whilst simultaneously helping you to effectively manage risk and work with you to achieve your desired outcomes in the best way for your business.
